Ushiku Map Poster
Ushiku lies in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, within commuting distance of Tokyo. On a map it has two faces. Near the railway, planned residential districts are laid out in neat loops and cul-de-sacs. Elsewhere, older settlements are scattered among fields and woods. Lake Ushiku, a long, narrow body of water, lies in a shallow valley, and the land around it is low and gently rolling.
The city is best known for the Ushiku Daibutsu, a bronze standing Buddha that is among the tallest statues in the world. It rises from landscaped grounds east of the centre and can be seen for kilometres across the flat countryside. The Joban Line runs through the city and links its residential areas with the capital, which shapes how much of Ushiku has grown.
A Ushiku map poster shows a very Japanese pattern of suburban growth. Compact housing estates cluster near the stations, and open agricultural land lies in between. The outline of the lake and the large parcel of the Daibutsu grounds give the composition clear points of focus among the smaller residential streets.

Daibutsu grounds
The giant bronze Buddha stands in a large landscaped park outside the centre. Its broad parcel stands out clearly from the surrounding fields and roads.
Planned residential loops
Newer neighbourhoods near the railway are built in looping streets and closed courts, a pattern typical of Tokyo's outer commuter belt.
