Valladolid, the largest city in Castile and León, stands on the plain where the Esgueva River joins the Pisuerga. The Pisuerga runs along the western side of the historic centre in a gentle curve, crossed by a series of bridges, while the Esgueva, largely covered over in the centre, once divided the old town. Beyond the river, newer districts spread toward the edge of the plateau.
The Plaza Mayor, one of the earliest regular main squares in Spain, forms a clear rectangle in the heart of the old town, and a web of narrow streets leads from it toward churches and colleges. Just to the south lies the Campo Grande, a large triangular park whose shape is one of the most recognisable forms on the whole map.
Valladolid served as the capital of Spain between 1601 and 1606. Christopher Columbus died here in 1506, and Miguel de Cervantes lived in the city for a time; his house is now a museum. This triangular park south of the centre is one of the city's defining shapes, a wedge of green bounded by broad avenues and filled with winding paths.
