Valladolid lies in the east of the Yucatán Peninsula, and its plan follows the Spanish colonial model almost exactly. A regular grid of numbered streets surrounds the main plaza, where the church of San Servacio faces the square. Toward the southwest, the Calzada de los Frailes runs diagonally to the former convent of San Bernardino de Siena in the Sisal neighbourhood.
The town is known for its cenotes, including Zací, a natural sinkhole set within the urban blocks. It is also a common base for visiting Chichén Itzá, which lies to the west. In 1847, the Caste War of Yucatán broke out here, and today Valladolid is listed as one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos.

This historic street runs at an angle from the centre toward the convent of San Bernardino de Siena. It is the one strong diagonal in an otherwise square plan.
