Vélez is one of the oldest towns in Colombia, founded in the sixteenth century in what is now the department of Santander. It stands on the slopes of the eastern Andes. The colonial grid, with a main plaza at its centre, meets steep and uneven ground, so the straight lines of the streets end abruptly at ravines or turn to follow the hillside.
The town is widely known for bocadillo veleño, a guava paste wrapped in bijao leaves, and for the Festival de la Guabina y el Tiple, a celebration of the region's traditional music. On a map, however, the landscape is the main story. The land drops away into deep valleys around the town, and roads wind down in long switchbacks toward the surrounding countryside.
