Vilappil lies a short distance from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, in the gently rolling country that rises inland from the coast. It is not a city in the compact sense but a spread of settlement. Houses are strung along roads and lanes rather than packed into blocks, and the map shows that looser, organic pattern.
From above, the road network looks almost hand-drawn.
