Villa Carlos Paz lies in the Punilla Valley west of Córdoba city, on the southern shore of Lake San Roque. This reservoir was created by damming rivers that come down from the Sierras Chicas and Sierras Grandes. From above, the town follows the water. Its streets bend around coves and peninsulas and run along the San Antonio River as it flows into the lake.
The centre is fairly compact, with a loose grid near the lakefront and the main commercial streets. Beyond it, the plan gives way to curving roads that follow the slopes. For decades the town has been one of Argentina's main inland holiday destinations. It is known for its summer theatre season and for the large cuckoo clock that visitors photograph in the centre.
