Villefranche-sur-Saône lies north of Lyon, on the western side of the Saône valley. Its plan is unusually linear. The historic town grew along one long main street, the rue Nationale, with narrow plots and courtyards on either side, and later neighbourhoods fill the space toward the river and the rising Beaujolais hills to the west.
The town is often called the capital of Beaujolais, and the vineyards that make the region's wines start just beyond its western edge. The older houses on the main street hide Renaissance courtyards and stairways behind plain façades. The Gothic church of Notre-Dame-des-Marais stands near the centre, while the A6 motorway and the railway run between the town and the Saône.
