Villingen-Schwenningen was formed in 1972 by merging two towns that had developed quite separately. On a map they still read as two centres with green space between them. Villingen, to the west, belonged historically to Baden. Schwenningen, to the east, belonged to Württemberg. The border between the two old states once ran between them.
Villingen's old town is one of the most recognisable town plans in southern Germany. Its main streets form a cross inside an oval ring of walls and gates, a layout often attributed to the Zähringer founders. The Brigach, one of the headwaters of the Danube, flows past it. In Schwenningen, the Neckar rises in a moor at the edge of town.

The Neckar rises in the Schwenninger Moos at the edge of Schwenningen and flows north toward Stuttgart and Heidelberg.
Brigach and the Danube
The Brigach, one of the rivers that form the Danube, runs past Villingen, so the town sits near the start of two major river systems.
