Vinces lies in Los Ríos province on Ecuador's flat, fertile coastal plain. The town grew along the Vinces River, and from above its streets form a regular grid that runs parallel to the riverbank. The river curves past the centre, and beyond the town the land is given over to plantations and fields, crossed by smaller waterways.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Vinces grew wealthy on cacao exports. Many prosperous families had close ties with France, which earned the town the nickname Paris chiquito, little Paris. A small replica of the Eiffel Tower stands in the town as a reminder of that era. Cacao is still part of the local economy today.
