Vinhedo lies in the interior of São Paulo state between Campinas and Jundiaí, on hilly ground crossed by two of Brazil's busiest highways, the Anhanguera and the Bandeirantes. On a map the town centre is a compact cluster of streets in a valley. Residential neighbourhoods and gated communities spread over the slopes around it, their curving roads following the contours of the hills.
The name means vineyard, a reference to the grape growing that Italian immigrants brought to the area. The town was once called Rocinha before taking its current name. The grape festival, the Festa da Uva, and local wine production remain part of its identity, alongside a growing industrial and logistics sector that makes good use of the highway links to São Paulo and Campinas.

The Anhanguera and Bandeirantes highways cross the municipality in long, sweeping lines. They are the boldest strokes on the map and a reminder of the town's links to the region.
