Vladivostok occupies the southern tip of the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula, between Amur Bay and Ussuri Bay on the Sea of Japan. Its centre wraps around the Golden Horn, a deep natural harbour whose curved outline dominates any map of the city. It is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the main base of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
The terrain is steep and uneven, so streets climb hills, switch back and follow ridges rather than forming a regular grid. Two cable-stayed bridges opened in 2012 changed the city's outline: the Golden Bridge crosses the Golden Horn in the centre, while the Russky Bridge spans the Eastern Bosphorus strait to Russky Island, where a large university campus now stands.

The Golden Bridge crosses the harbour, while the Russky Bridge spans the strait to Russky Island. Both appear as long thin lines across open water.

Steep terrain bends streets around slopes and along ridges, producing a winding pattern quite unlike the grid of most Russian cities.
