Wa is the capital of the Upper West Region in the north-west of Ghana. It lies on the open savanna, and on a map the town looks compact and easy to read. The main roads radiate from the centre in several directions toward other towns in the region and toward the borders with Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire.
The town is the seat of the Wa Naa, the traditional ruler of the Wala people. His palace, built in the Sudano-Sahelian style with thick mud walls, is one of the historic buildings of the town. Wa also has several old mosques that reflect the long Islamic tradition of the region.
