Waldkirch lies in the Elz valley on the western edge of the Black Forest, a short distance northeast of Freiburg. From above, the town is long and narrow, following the valley floor where the river, the main road and the railway run side by side. Streets climb only a little way up the slopes before dense forest takes over on both sides.
The town is known for its tradition of organ building, especially fairground and barrel organs. In the nineteenth century this made Waldkirch a centre of mechanical music, a craft still remembered in local workshops and a museum. The ruins of the Kastelburg stand above the valley. To the southeast rises the Kandel, one of the best-known summits of the Black Forest.

The historic centre is a compact cluster of short streets and squares on the valley floor. It is the densest area of the map and the traditional heart of the town.
Forest slopes
Steep wooded hillsides rise on both sides, crossed only by winding forest tracks. The built-up area ends abruptly and the map opens into quiet space.
