Warri lies in the western Niger Delta, and from above it is defined by water. The Warri River and a network of creeks wind through and around the city, and to the south and west the land breaks into wetland and mangrove. The street network sits on the firmer ground between these channels, so its outline is irregular and follows the waterways.
The city is one of the main centres of Nigeria's oil industry, with a refinery and port activity that have shaped its growth. It merges with neighbouring Effurun into one continuous urban area, which shows on the map as a broad spread of streets running inland from the river.
