Wernigerode lies at the northern edge of the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. On a map the old town appears as a compact knot of streets around the market square, with newer districts spreading north onto the flatter land, while wooded hills rise immediately to the south, where the town meets the mountains.
The town is famous for its colourful half-timbered houses and its town hall with pointed towers on the market square. Wernigerode Castle stands on a hill above the old town, and the narrow-gauge Harz railway starts here, with steam trains climbing to the summit of the Brocken.
