West Valley City spreads across the western half of the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. From above, it is a textbook example of the regional grid. Wide arterial roads run at even intervals north–south and east–west, and residential streets curve and loop inside the large blocks they create. The Jordan River marks the eastern side, and to the west the land rises toward the Oquirrh Mountains.
The city was incorporated in 1980 from several existing communities and has since become the second-largest city in Utah. It is home to the Maverik Center arena and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. It is also one of the most diverse communities in the state, with a population drawn from many countries and backgrounds.
