Westerlo is in the Kempen region of Antwerp province, a low, sandy landscape of woods, heath and small rivers. The Grote Nete flows past the town and meanders gently through meadows. On the map, the town appears as a loose cluster of streets surrounded by an unusually large amount of green space for Flanders.
In the village of Tongerlo, part of the municipality, stands Tongerlo Abbey, a Norbertine community founded in the twelfth century. Its walled precinct, with courtyards, farm buildings and a surrounding moat, forms a distinctive rectangular island in the landscape. It is one of the most recognisable shapes in the area.
