Westfield lies in Hampden County, western Massachusetts, where the Westfield River leaves the hills and enters the Connecticut River valley. From above, the river loops along the northern side of the downtown, and the city's older streets gather around a central green. Beyond the core, residential neighbourhoods spread out across flatter land, with the Berkshire foothills rising to the west.
The city was once known as the Whip City, because it was the centre of American buggy whip manufacturing in the nineteenth century. It is home to Westfield State University, and Barnes Regional Airport lies to the north, its runways forming a distinct shape on the map. Farmland and woodland still border much of the city.
