From above, Wichita Falls is a North Texas city of straight lines and one winding exception. The Wichita River runs from southwest to northeast across the street grid, and its wooded banks and creek tributaries break up the regular blocks. Downtown sits close to the river, where the older street pattern is set at a slight angle to the surveyed roads that spread out over the flat prairie.
The city is named for waterfalls on the river that were washed away by a flood in the late nineteenth century. An artificial cascade was later built beside the highway so the name would once again have something to point to. Downtown also has the Newby-McMahon Building, a very small brick tower known as the world's littlest skyscraper and the subject of a long-told story about a misread blueprint.

Arterial roads run out to farmland, Lake Wichita sits on the southern side, and the long runways of Sheppard Air Force Base lie to the north.
