Wigston Magna, usually just called Wigston, lies immediately south of Leicester in the Borough of Oadby and Wigston. Once a large village, it grew during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries into a town closely linked to the city, and today its streets merge into the wider Leicester urban area.
The town has a history of framework knitting, a local hosiery trade that once employed many households, and a former knitter's workshop is preserved as a small museum. On the map an older core of streets around the parish churches is surrounded by later residential estates, with curving roads and cul-de-sacs typical of suburban expansion.
