Winthrop is a town on a peninsula in Boston Harbor, just north of Logan International Airport and east of downtown Boston. On the map it is almost an island. Water surrounds it on nearly every side, and it is connected to the mainland only by a narrow link to East Boston and Revere near Belle Isle Marsh.
Within that compact outline, streets curve over small hills and down to beaches, with neighbourhoods such as Point Shirley and Cottage Hill each holding a distinct part of the peninsula.
