Wolmaransstad lies on the level plains of South Africa's North West province, where the land is given over to maize, sunflowers and cattle. The town's plan is the classic one of the old Transvaal: a regular grid of broad streets laid out around a central axis, with townships and newer extensions sitting apart from the original core.
It is the administrative seat of the Maquassi Hills municipality and a service town for the surrounding farms. The district is also known for alluvial diamond diggings, which have drawn prospectors to its river gravels for generations. On the map a main road carries through-traffic along the town's length, the spine the rest of the grid hangs from.
