Wŏnju lies in the south-west of Gangwon Province, in a basin opened by small rivers and bounded by mountains. The Chiaksan range rises sharply on the eastern side and gives the map a dense, dark edge of ridges and valleys. The city itself spreads across the lower ground to the west, following streams and the roads that link it to Seoul and the south.
The older core sits near a central stream. There, the restored site of the Gangwon provincial office recalls the centuries when Wŏnju was the administrative seat of the region. Newer districts stretch out around it in larger, more regular blocks, including an innovation city planned in the 2010s for relocated public institutions.
Chiaksan National Park is the city's best-known landscape, with steep trails and the temple of Guryongsa in its valleys. The area is also known for hanji, traditional Korean paper, which the city celebrates with a festival. In the centre, the restored site of the Joseon-era provincial office marks the historic heart of Wŏnju. It is a small compound surrounded by the modern commercial grid.
Innovation City
A newer planned district on the city's edge lays out wide roads, parks and campus-like blocks. It contrasts clearly with the older, denser streets near the centre.
