Wonosari is the capital of Gunungkidul Regency, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta on Java. It sits on a raised limestone plateau southeast of Yogyakarta city, and its map is shaped by that karst landscape: a compact town centre with roads leading out across farmland and rolling hills.
South of the town, the Gunung Sewu karst region spreads toward the Indian Ocean in countless small conical hills, and the coast beyond is lined with small beaches and cliffs.
