Worcester lies on the River Severn in the English West Midlands. From above, the river runs north to south along the western side of the centre. The cathedral stands right on its bank, and the medieval street pattern spreads east from it. The Worcester and Birmingham Canal curves around the eastern side of the city before joining the Severn to the south.
The city has a long list of associations. It was the site of the final battle of the English Civil War in 1651, and it is the home of Worcestershire sauce and Royal Worcester porcelain. On the far bank of the Severn, the county cricket ground at New Road is known for flooding when the river rises.
