Xiaoshan is the part of Hangzhou that lies on the south bank of the Qiantang River. The river is the most important feature on the map. It is broad and gently curved, and its estuary is known for the tidal bore that surges upstream each autumn. Several large bridges cross it, linking Xiaoshan to central Hangzhou on the north bank.
Inland, the map becomes a combination of new wide roads and older waterways. Canals and streams cross the flat land, and many neighbourhoods follow their lines. To the south, Xianghu Lake lies among hills. Its long shoreline is lined with paths, and nearby is the Kuahuqiao site, where archaeologists found a Neolithic canoe about eight thousand years old.
