Xinye lies in the south of Henan, in the Nanyang basin near the border with Hubei. The country around it is flat and heavily farmed. On a map the town is a compact block of streets set among fields. Its main roads run in long straight lines, and the grid widens toward the edges where newer districts have been added.
The Bai River passes along the town and is the main natural line on the map. It bends gently across the plain, and roads and bridges cross it at intervals. Away from the water, small field boundaries and village clusters fill the surrounding area. They give the edges of the print a fine, even texture.
A Xinye map poster also carries a story from Chinese history. At the end of the Han dynasty the warlord Liu Bei was stationed at Xinye. The town appears in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which gives it a place in one of China's best-known novels. On paper, the river and the regular streets show a modest town on a wide plain.
