Yanghe is the seat of Yongning County in Ningxia, just south of the regional capital, Yinchuan. It lies on the Yinchuan Plain, a fertile strip of land along the Yellow River, with the Helan Mountains rising to the west. The map shows a regular modern grid bordered by fields and cut by long irrigation canals.
Irrigation has shaped this plain for more than two thousand years, and some of Ningxia's canal systems trace their origins to the Qin and Han dynasties. As a result, the countryside around Yanghe is drawn in straight lines. Main canals, branch channels, field edges and crossing roads create a crisp, almost architectural pattern.
