Yangjiang lies on the western coast of Guangdong, and on a map the Moyang River gives the city its shape. The river winds through the urban area on its way south to the sea. The central streets gather along its banks, and the newer districts spread outward over lower, flatter ground. The water divides the plan into clear sections, which gives a black-and-white print a natural structure.
South of the centre the land breaks up into a jagged coastline of bays, sandbars and headlands. Hailing Island lies just offshore and is one of the best-known stretches of coast in the province.
