Yishun is one of Singapore's public housing new towns, built from the late 1970s onward in the north of the island. Its plan follows the classic new town model: a town centre beside the MRT station, surrounded by neighbourhoods of housing blocks, each with its own shops, schools and open spaces. From above, the pattern reads as a set of clusters linked by looping local roads.
The North-South Line runs through the town on a raised track, with stations at Yishun and Khatib, and it slices the map into east and west halves. Arterial avenues curve around the neighbourhoods rather than cutting through them. The street network therefore looks softer and more rounded than an older city grid, with courtyards and car parks tucked between the blocks.
To the east, Lower Seletar Reservoir brings a long body of water into the frame, its banks lined with parkland and paths. Yishun Park and Yishun Pond add more green and blue shapes among the housing.
