Yŏch’im-dong Map Poster & Print
Yŏch’im-dong lies in Chagang Province, a heavily mountainous region of North Korea that borders China. In terrain like this, towns follow the valleys: from above, streets and buildings form a narrow, elongated pattern along the lower ground, with slopes rising steeply on either side. The outline is shaped almost entirely by the land rather than by any plan imposed on it.
Little detailed public information about the town is available, and the map often says more than any written description. Chagang is known for its forests and rivers, and much of the province is thinly populated, with towns strung along the river valleys and the roads and rail lines that follow them.
A Yŏch’im-dong map poster shows the town exactly as the available map data records it: a line of streets in a valley, the roads connecting it to other places and the open mountain terrain around them. It is a spare, almost abstract image, and its simplicity suits a place that few outsiders have seen.

Connecting routes
Roads run along the valley toward neighbouring towns and villages, drawn as long, gently curving lines that trace the easiest path through the mountains.
Mountain space
Steep, largely empty slopes surround the streets, leaving wide areas of blank paper that show how small the town is within its landscape.
