Yoichi lies on the western coast of Hokkaido, at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula and west of Otaru. From above, the town sits where the Yoichi River reaches the sea, with the settlement spreading across the flat land near the river mouth and along the shore. Hills rise behind the town, and orchards and farms fill the valley inland.
Yoichi is best known for the Nikka Whisky distillery, founded here in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, often called the father of Japanese whisky. The distillery's grounds sit near the station, close to the town center. The area is also known for its apples and other fruit, grown on the slopes around town.
