Yoshinogawa lies in Tokushima Prefecture in eastern Shikoku, along the middle course of the Yoshino River. The river flows east through a long plain between mountain ranges to the north and south. On the map the city looks like a series of settlements lined up along the river valley. Between them lie fields and small roads, and the broad river with its wide gravel banks runs through the middle.
The city was formed in 2004 by merging several towns along the river, which is also where its name comes from. The Yoshino is one of Japan's major rivers. Its plain was historically known for growing indigo, and Tokushima's indigo dye, called Awa ai, has been famous for centuries.
