Four-road crossing
The town's name comes from the routes that met here. Main roads still come together near the centre and shape the rest of the street plan.

Yotsukaidō Map Poster & Print
The name Yotsukaidō means roughly four roads, a reminder that the town grew where several routes crossed. A modern map still shows that logic. Main roads meet near the station, and residential neighbourhoods spread out between them on the flat Shimōsa plateau east of Chiba city.
The rail line runs through the town, and most of the denser streets gather around the station. Beyond it, the streets become a finely divided pattern of houses and small lots. Between the built-up areas are patches of farmland and woodland, and small valleys cut into the edge of the plateau.
A Yotsukaidō map poster shows the texture of Japanese suburban life. The streets are tightly woven and a little irregular, the rail line gives the plan a clear axis, and open ground remains between the neighbourhoods. It is an understated subject that looks refined in black and white.

Station district
The rail line crosses Yotsukaidō in a straight band. Shops and denser housing cluster around the station, and the streets thin out with distance.
Plateau edges
Farmland, woodland and shallow valleys lie between the residential areas. They add open shapes and soft edges to the otherwise dense suburban pattern.
