Yuncheng lies in the far south-west of Shanxi, in a basin near the great bend of the Yellow River. Just south of the city is its most unusual feature, a long, shallow salt lake. Its evaporation ponds show from above as a patchwork of rectangles, and beyond it the Zhongtiao Mountains rise as a long ridge along the southern horizon.
Salt has been harvested here for thousands of years and was an important source of revenue for early Chinese states. The Yuncheng area is also the traditional home of Guan Yu, the Three Kingdoms general later honoured as a deity. The large Guandi Temple at Xiezhou, near the city, is one of the most important temples dedicated to him.
