Zaragoza is in the department of Chimaltenango, on the high volcanic plateau west of Guatemala City. Like many towns founded in the Spanish colonial period, it is built around a central square. Its streets run out from the square in a fairly regular grid, which shows clearly when the map is drawn in plain lines.
The Inter-American Highway passes close by, linking the town with Chimaltenango to the east and the western highlands beyond. Outside the grid, the pattern breaks into farm roads and field boundaries. The land is cut by the steep ravines typical of this part of the country, so the outskirts have an irregular edge.
