Zárate lies in the north of Buenos Aires Province, on the south bank of the Paraná de las Palmas, one of the main branches of the Paraná delta. On a map, the river edge dominates: a broad band of water with docks, industrial land and the channels and islands of the delta on the far side.
The Zárate–Brazo Largo bridge complex crosses the delta from here towards Entre Ríos, carrying both road and rail over the water and islands. Behind the waterfront, the town has a conventional Argentine grid of square blocks that becomes more open towards the edges. Along the river, port terminals and industrial plants take up large plots with long straight edges.
