Zedelgem is a municipality rather than a single town. Several villages, including Zedelgem itself, Loppem, Aartrijke and Veldegem, sit within a patchwork of fields, hedgerows and small woods just south of Bruges in West Flanders. On the map each village forms a small knot of streets, and narrow roads link them across open land.
Loppem Castle, a neo-Gothic country house set in a landscaped park with ponds, is the best-known building in the area. In the autumn of 1918 King Albert I stayed there during the last weeks of the First World War. The E40 motorway and a railway line cross the municipality, giving the rural map a few firm, straight lines against the looser pattern of lanes.
