Zeist lies just east of Utrecht, at the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a long, wooded ridge of glacial sand hills. From above, the town is unusually green. Long, straight avenues cut through it, lined by villas and country estates, and the built-up area fades into forest to the east and south. It has a spacious, park-like plan rather than a compact historic core.
At the centre of that plan is Slot Zeist, a 17th-century country house set in formal gardens with a long, straight axis, the Slotlaan, running toward it. Beside the house are two quiet squares built by the Moravian Brethren in the 18th century, the Broederplein and Zusterplein, whose orderly layout still stands out on the map.
