Zele lies in East Flanders, roughly midway between Ghent and Antwerp, in the low, open country of the Scheldt basin. From above it has the pattern typical of the region: a compact centre around the church and market square, and long roads leading outward, lined with houses that thin gradually into fields. The town and its outlying hamlets read as a web rather than a single block.
That pattern of ribbon development gives the map its structure. Straight and gently curving roads reach out like spokes, and between them lie rectangular plots of farmland, drainage ditches and small patches of woodland.
