Zelenchukskaya Map Poster & Print
Zelenchukskaya is a stanitsa, a historic Cossack settlement, in Karachay-Cherkessia on the northern slopes of the Caucasus. The Bolshoy Zelenchuk river flows along it, and the village stretches beside the water in a long grid of straight streets and large household plots. From above it looks spacious and regular, with fields and forested hills around it.
The valley is known for astronomy. Upstream, near Nizhny Arkhyz, the Special Astrophysical Observatory operates the BTA-6, once the world's largest optical telescope, and the RATAN-600 radio telescope stands nearby. Ancient Alanian churches also survive in the upper valley, among the oldest Christian buildings in Russia.
A Zelenchukskaya map poster shows the stanitsa's disciplined layout against the natural line of the river. The plots make a large, even grid, while the edges of the map point to the mountains that start rising to the south.
