Zerbst lies in Saxony-Anhalt, between the Elbe and the Fläming hills. Its map is defined by an outline that many German towns have lost: much of the medieval town wall survives, with towers and gates, and the line of the fortifications still encloses the old centre. The Nuthe river flows past, and parkland marks the former castle grounds.
Zerbst is best known as the childhood home of Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, who became Catherine the Great of Russia. The ducal palace where her family lived was badly damaged in April 1945, when bombing destroyed much of the town. Only a fragment of the palace remains, but the old town's plan survived.
A Zerbst map poster shows that historic outline clearly. The ring of the wall encloses an irregular grid of streets, with the market square and churches inside. Outside it, newer housing, roads and farmland spread across the flat Anhalt landscape.
