Zielona Góra lies in western Poland, in the Lubusz region, among low hills and extensive forests. From above, the old town appears as a compact core of short streets around a central market square, surrounded by newer districts that spread outward along main roads. Wooded areas press close to the city on several sides, and the name itself, meaning Green Mountain, fits the landscape well.
The city is known for its long tradition of wine-making, unusual for Poland, and for the annual Winobranie festival that celebrates the grape harvest. Small bronze figures of Bacchus are scattered around the centre, and a palm house stands on a hill above the old town. The city is also home to a university that gives it a lively student population.
