Zima is a town in Irkutsk Oblast, on the Oka River, a tributary of the Angara, several hundred kilometres northwest of Irkutsk. Its growth is tied to the Trans-Siberian Railway, which runs through the town, and it has long served as a stop and work centre on the line. Zima is also known as the hometown of the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, whose poem about Zima Junction made its name familiar.
On the map the railway is the backbone. Tracks and yards run through the town in a long, straight corridor, and streets are laid out on either side in fairly regular blocks. The Oka flows nearby in wide bends, with floodplain and islands along its course. Beyond the town, the land opens into Siberian forest and fields, crossed only by a few roads.

The Oka runs past Zima in broad meanders with islands and floodplain, which gives the poster a soft, flowing counterpoint to the tracks.
