Żywiec lies in the south of Silesian Voivodeship, in a basin surrounded by the Beskid mountains, where the Koszarawa River joins the Soła. Just north of the town the Soła has been dammed to form Lake Żywiec, a large reservoir whose long, irregular outline is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map, reaching into valleys between wooded hills.
The town is known across Poland and beyond for its brewery, founded in 1856 under the Habsburgs, whose beer carries the town's name. Żywiec also has two castles: the Old Castle, with a Renaissance arcaded courtyard, and the New Castle, a later residence of the Habsburg family, both set beside a large landscaped park that appears as a broad green space on the map.
The market square sits at the centre, with streets fanning out toward the rivers and the hills.
