Aabenraa is at the inner end of a long, narrow fjord on the east coast of southern Jutland, and the map makes that setting very clear. The fjord cuts inland like a wedge of water, the harbour lines its end, and the town rises from the waterfront onto the slopes and wooded hills behind.
The fjord is deep enough to take large ships, which has made Aabenraa an important port for centuries, and in the age of sail it was a shipbuilding and shipping town. The old centre still has narrow streets and low houses, and Brundlund Castle stands on its southern side.
