Te mape
Abomey lies on the plateau of southern Benin, inland from the coast. Its layout is loose and spread out: wide roads and tracks connect residential compounds, markets and open spaces rather than forming a tight grid. On a map, the most distinctive element is the group of large palace enclosures near the centre, set out as broad rectangular blocks.
From the seventeenth century until the late nineteenth century, Abomey was the capital of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Successive kings built their palaces here, and the Royal Palaces of Abomey are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for their earthen walls and bas-reliefs telling the history of the kingdom.
An Abomey map poster shows a city where royal history is still written into the ground plan. The palace compounds form strong, geometric shapes, and the roads and neighbourhoods around them look informal and open. In black and white, the map has a sparse, structured quality that sets it apart from denser colonial-era port cities.
The palace enclosures of the Dahomey kings occupy a large area near the centre, appearing as broad walled rectangles on the map.
Roads and tracks spread out between compounds in a loose pattern, leaving generous space between the neighbourhoods.
The city sits on inland plateau country, and its roads run out across the flat land to Bohicon and other towns nearby.

Abomey is important to anyone interested in West African history, to people with roots in Benin, and to visitors who have walked through the royal palaces. The poster turns a heritage site into a clear, quiet map.
