Abū Zabad is a town in West Kordofan, in the broad semi-arid savanna of central Sudan. The landscape is mostly flat, with sandy soils, scattered trees and watercourses that run only in the rainy season. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of blocks and compounds, with open country pressing close on every side.
The streets form a loose, partly regular pattern around a central area where trade gathers. From there roads and tracks lead out across the plain toward farms, villages and other towns in Kordofan. An Abū Zabad map poster highlights those radiating lines, the way a small settlement becomes a meeting point for a much wider rural region.
Life here follows the seasons. Farming and herding depend on the summer rains, and the land changes from dry to green and back again over the year. The black-and-white map cannot show colour, but the pale space around the town suggests the scale of the savanna, and the thin lines crossing it show how the town connects to its hinterland.
The densest blocks sit near the centre, where commerce concentrates. On paper this is the darkest part of the map, and the rest of the plan radiates from it.
Roads and footpaths leave the town in several directions across the plain. They show the links to farms and villages that make the town a regional hub.
Open land with seasonal watercourses surrounds the settlement. The map leaves it mostly empty, which gives the town's small, compact shape a strong presence.
