Al Khuşūş lies in Qalyubia Governorate, on the northern edge of Greater Cairo. The capital's continuous urban area stops here and the farmland of the Nile Delta begins. From above, the city is compact and closely built. Narrow streets pack between multi-storey buildings, and in many places the street pattern clearly follows the lines of older field boundaries.
That agricultural origin still shapes the map. Long, straight streets often follow the direction of former irrigation channels and plot edges. The blocks in between are irregular and deep.
