Alexandria, the seat of Teleorman County in southern Romania, was founded in 1834 and named after Prince Alexandru Ghica. Unlike many older towns, it was planned from the start, and its map shows a remarkably regular grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks laid out across the flat Wallachian plain.
